It all started with this bamboo bread box from Amazon:
Of course, it didn’t come pre-assembled, but the instructions weren’t too hard to follow:
Then there was the matter of painting it. First, I sanded the surfaces with a fine grit sandpaper so that the paint would “take” better. Then I painted the wood with basic white acrylic paint, which I also lightly sanded when dry so the surface would be smoother. I then painted on a clear-coat sealant.
Next, I measured, cut, and applied white shelf liner on the bottom, back, and shelf of the box.
Finally, the biggest challenge was to come up with some way to make a cute “bakery-style” awning. I debated using fabric, but I couldn’t figure out how to make that work.
Fortunately, while browsing my local Hobby Lobby, I came across the ideal material—not too stiff and not too flimsy: sheets of foam!
With a little cutting and gluing, I managed to craft the perfect awning. After that, I designed and ordered a sign from Zazzle and ordered a pink lockbox from Walmart, which my husband then kindly installed for me.
My wonderful neighbor generously gave me the perfect cedar post and made the “table top” that the box slides onto. This way, I can remove my little bakery so it doesn’t get weathered. I keep it safe inside unless I’m doing a bake sale.
Finally, my husband stained and installed the post. I’m so grateful for his and my neighbor’s help, and I’m so happy with how the little bakery turned out!
